Safely Viewing the Solar Eclipse

Dr. Beth Lin of Nuwave Vision in Westlake, Ohio reminds the community of important safety measures to prepare for the upcoming Eclipse. On April 8th, for the first time since 1806, our local neighborhoods will experience a Total Solar Eclipse, with darkness expected to occur for approximately 4 minutes.

To avoid permanent vision damage, including retinal burns that can alter color vision, distort vision, and cause loss of central vision, you must protect the eyes from looking directly at the sun. This solar retinopathy can occur in less than a second of viewing. Appropriate eye protection includes Number 14 Welder’s glass and solar shades that comply with ISO 12312-2 international standard.

Avoid viewing through a smartphone, camera, binocular, or telescope. Standard sunglasses, even those with 100% UV protection are not safe for viewing the sun. Always supervise children.

If you have any questions or experience vision changes following the eclipse, please contact Dr. Lin at (440) 881-0002.
