Saving Mallards at Lake Erie Nature & Science Center

Recently, an oil spill affected local wildlife, including these three mallards. Lake Erie Nature and Wildlife Center in Bay Village’s dedicated staff members, interns, and volunteers carefully and thoroughly washed them through a special procedure that removes the oil from their feathers while ensuring their waterproofing is restored. On average, it takes 20-30 minutes to remove oil from each bird. In addition to cleaning, they administered medication and provided food, fluids, and housing.

After they were brought to the Center and cleaned, Wildlife Specialists fed and monitored them for behavior, waterproofing, digestion, and overall health for 10 days. Once deemed healthy, these mallards were released back to their original habitat. “We are grateful for the collaboration with Broadview Heights Animal Control and Ohio Division of Wildlife to ensure these mallards received the care they needed.”
