Westlake Porter Public Library Receives Grant for Universal Changing Table

Westlake Porter Public Library has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities to purchase and install a universal changing table. The grant is part of a broader initiative to increase the number of universal changing tables in Cuyahoga County.

The new changing table is now available for use in the family restroom located in the Youth Services Department. With a weight capacity of up to 1,000 pounds, the table is designed to accommodate adults as well as children, making it easier for caregivers to assist individuals with disabilities in need of self-care services such as diaper changes, colostomy care, and catheter maintenance.

Universal changing tables are essential for ensuring both children and adults have their basic needs met in a comfortable, dignified manner. When a public facility doesn’t have a universal changing table, individuals and families are met with a difficult choice to limit their time in public spaces or not visit at all. The new changing table enables individuals with disabilities and their families to participate fully in all that the library offers without barriers.

“The new universal changing table is much more comfortable for all who need it and makes the library a place that’s even more accessible to our disabled patrons,” said Disability Resource Librarian Natalie Bota. “We are grateful to the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities for making this possible with the grant.”

This reflects Westlake Porter Public Library’s ongoing commitment to creating a more accessible and inclusive environment for all members of the community.
