Three Bay High School Students Named to ODNR Teen Advisory Council

As part of the Bay High School Experienceship Program, three Bay High School Seniors have been selected to serve on the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Conservation Teen Advisory Council. Congratulations to Maggie McCale, Avery Schriner and Ruby Shaffer.

Maggie McCale is a part of National Honor Society, Key Club, Sources of Strength, Varsity soccer, and outside of Bay High School, she is a volunteer at The Village Project and participates in club soccer.  As for her future plans, she has committed to play soccer at Kenyon College, where she plans on majoring in environmental science, and then going to graduate school to obtain an engineering degree. “Being appointed to this committee has been a huge honor,” said Maggie. “I’ve always loved the environment and want to do everything I can to save and prevent further damage to it. With this council, I hope to learn more about specific ways to help the environment, while working alongside other students with similar interests and goals.”

Avery Schriner co-leads the Bay High School environmental club called Project Earth, and is involved with Model United Nations and she serves as the Digital Editor for the school newspaper, The Bay Window. Avery also serves as Secretary of the Class of 2026 and participates in Key Club, National Honor Society, Blood Cancer United Student Visionaries, and Bay High Lacrosse and Soccer. Outside of school, she enjoys playing piano and hiking. “I hope to further my knowledge of and involvement with nature through the study of Sustainability and Design in college,” said Avery. “The ODNR Conservation Teen Advisory Council is an honor to be a part of, and I look forward to learning about and enacting important solutions for the environment.”

Ruby Shaffer is a part of the Youth Philanthropy Fellowship and the National Honor Society at Bay High School. She hopes to study in the field of environmental science and conservation to pursue a career in that area. “Being a part of the ODNR Teen Advisory Council is an honor, and I hope to gain knowledge and experience through serving on this team,” said Ruby.

This prestigious opportunity allows high school student-leaders to work together and contribute ideas to enhance ODNRs youth outreach and program efforts. These students will also develop leadership skills and participate in outdoor adventures from the shores of Lake Erie to the hills of Appalachia.
