Westlake Police Shares Scam Tips

On World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, Westlake Police reminded people it is a good time to think about scams that seem to target the older population.

If someone is telling you to put cash into a Crypto/BitCoin ATM IT IS A SCAM. If someone is directing you to buy gift cards and read the serial numbers over the phone or take photos of the cards IT IS A SCAM. Education is key. Talk to your loved ones and neighbors so they think twice before acting. We see too many losing hard earned money to remote thieves! Be Aware: Cryptocurrency Fraud is on the Rise!

Scammers are talking people into withdrawing cash and feeding it into cryptocurrency ATMs. Once cash becomes crypto, it is nearly impossible to get back.

Crypto ATMs now sit in gas stations, convenience stores, and grocery stores across Northeast Ohio — and scammers use them as a one-way pipeline for your cash. These crimes are designed to work on smart people. Knowing the playbook protects you, your parents and your neighbors.

Warning Signs

You are likely being scammed on the phone:

• Tells you to withdraw cash and deposit it into a Bitcoin or crypto ATM.
• Stays on the line and directs your every move — even what to say to the bank teller.
• Tells you to keep it secret from family or bank staff.
• Pressures you to act right now or threatens arrest or frozen accounts.

The Story Changes — The Ending Doesn’t

Common lies scammers use to get you to the machine:

• A grandchild or loved one needs bail money or has a warrant.
• Your computer has a virus or your account was hacked.
• A “police officer,” court, or government agency demands payment.
• Your money is at risk and must be moved to a “safe account.”
• A blackmailer threatens to share private photos.
• An online romantic partner you’ve never met needs funds.

The One Rule That Beats Every Version of This Scam

No legitimate business or government agency — not your bank, not the police, not the IRS — will ever tell you to deposit cash into a cryptocurrency ATM. If anyone does, it is a scam. Hang up, talk to someone you trust, and call us before you withdraw a dime. Already sent money? Call us right away — fast reporting gives us the best chance to help, and you will never be judged for coming forward.
