St. Bernadette Students Celebrate Birthday with Seniors

St. Bernadette student Donovan Sergi celebrated his 13th birthday in a very special way. He shared the joy with residents of Lakeside Assisted Living at The Normandy Senior Living in Rocky River last Thursday.

Donovan and his classmates are regular visitors to The Normandy Senior Living as part the the St. Bernadette School outreach program Community Action Kids Edition (C.A.K.E.).

C.A.K.E. is an after school group that meets to learn about charitable organizations and opportunities in our community to help others. Students are exposed to hardships others may endure, while being given the opportunity to show love and support to those in need in various ways. Led by parent volunteers, the group originated when a few moms were hoping to plant seeds of the Christian faith, and encourage the kids, from a young age, to love and care for your neighbor. Today, the school hosts four groups, from 2nd to 8th grade, each consisting of approximately 20 students.

Donovan Sergi celebrated his 13th birthday last week with a trip to The Normandy Senior Living in Rocky River. Residents Maxine Komaransky and Jane Young were delighted to share cupcakes with him!

New this year are the Normandy Senior Living Community visits. Each month a group of students visits the Normandy Assisted Living Center after school where they interact with the residents in games, conversation, and activities.

The kids enjoy this experience so much and the response has been so overwhelming that it was a natural for Donovan to include his senior friends in his birthday plans.

“I really like meeting different people and learning from them about how things were,” said Donovan as he shared cupcakes, smiles and the well wishes of residents.

Happy Birthday, Donovan! Best wishes for a great year ahead!
