Westlake Porter Public Library’s Early April Calendar of Events

Following is Westlake Porter Public Library’s early April 2022 calendar of events. All programs are subject to change. Please check westlakelibrary.org or follow the library on Facebook and Twitter (@WestlakePorter) for the latest updates.

Saturday, April 2 (11-11:45 a.m.) Adapted Storytime – Join us for this storytime designed for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime. Content is geared toward ages 3-7 years. Registration begins one week before each session.

Saturday, April 2 (3-4 p.m.) Illustration Creation – Learn about a featured illustrator then create a project inspired by their art. Grades 1-3. Registration begins February 26.

Sunday, April 3 (2-3 p.m.) Art Smarts – Explore works of a well-known artist and then use what you’ve seen to create an art piece of your own! Grades 3-6. Please register.

Monday, April 4 (10-10:30 a.m.) Music Monday – Develop pre-reading skills with music, movement and rhythm through stories, songs and rhymes. Ages 2-6. Registration begins February 28.

Monday, April 4 (4-4:30 p.m.) Myrna Chelko Early Literacy Initiative Storytime – Members of WPPL’s Myrna Chelko Early Literacy Initiative are invited to join Ms. Jamie for an afternoon of silly stories, songs and rhymes! These early literacy activities will help you earn badges toward completion of the MCELI. You must be eligible to join or have already joined the MCELI to attend this program. Monday, April 4 (6-8:30 p.m.) Heartsaver CPR/AED – Get certified for adult, child, and infant CPR and AED. Email required for certification. Participants under the age of 14 must have a parent or legal guardian with them in class. Instruction provided by certified instructors from UH St. John Medical Center. Tuesday, April 5 (In Person, 7-8:15 p.m.) VOICES Book Discussion – Join us for a bimonthly book discussion with a focus on #OwnVoices and #DiverseAuthors titles that depict various experiences, identities, and intersectionality. This month we are reading The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr. This program is a partnership with the LGBT Community Center of Greater Cleveland.

Wednesday, April 6 (6:30-8:30 p.m.) Horror Film Club – Join us for another creepy classic from the Vault! New members are welcome, but children under 13 must be with an adult. Join us in person or stream on Watch2Gether.com. The link will be posted at 6 p.m. the day of the program.

Wednesdays, April 6 (7-7:30 p.m.) and Saturdays, April 9 and 16 (10:30-11 a.m.) Family Storytime – Join us for rhymes, songs and play! For families with children ages 2-6. Siblings are welcome. Registration begins one week before each session.

Thursday, April 7 (9 a.m-9 p.m.) Jewelry Junction: Spring Fling Bracelet Pick-up Kit – Make a colorful spring bracelet using silver findings and colorful glass beads. Registration begins March 31.

Thursday, April 7 (7-8:30 p.m.) World at War Forum – The World at War Forum is a group of local people interested in the history of the first fifty years of the twentieth century and the cataclysmic World Wars and associated events that helped shape our current world. The April program will be Best Fighter Planes of the Second World War, presented by Library Director Andrew Mangels.  He will examine the benefits and drawbacks of many of the most commonly used fighters used by the combatants. Thursday, April 7 (7-8 p.m.) Author Visit-Dana McSwain – Do you like gothic tales of horror?  Do you like stories of unsettling psychological terror?  Then join us for an evening with Dana McSwain, author of the NYC Big Book Award winner, Roseneath. We’ll chat with Dana about Roseneath, her writing process, her inspiration and everything in between. Bring your books, your questions, and your curiosity for the peculiar. Please register.

Friday, April 8 (9 a.m.-6 p.m.) Peep Diorama Kit – Express your peep-sonality by creating a peep diorama! Pick up your peep kit, build a diorama, and post a photo of it to social media using the hashtag #wpplpeeps22. All ages. Peep dioramas should be family-friendly and focused on a favorite book or favorite book character. Please see “Peep Diorama Contest” photos on our social media page for inspiration from your library staff.

Friday, April 8 (4-5 p.m.) Brick Builders – Do you love Legos©? Then bring your ideas and imagination to Brick Builders! Bricks provided. No registration required, but room capacity is limited. First come, first served. Ages 5-12.

Saturday, April 9 (10:30 a.m.-Noon) Medicare Ins and Outs – Do you need accurate, unbiased information about Medicare? Attend a presentation by OSHIIP, Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program, to learn the “ins and outs” of Medicare. Please register.

Saturday, April 9 (1-2 p.m.) Science of Studying – Sylvan Learning will be here to teach teens in grades 7-12 tried and true practices for effective studying. Registration begins April 2.

Saturday, April 9 (2-3:30 p.m.) Hand Sewing for Literacy – Learn basic sewing skills and create a sewn project while listening to a story with sewing as its central theme. Hand sewing helps kids develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, self-confidence, patience and focus – skills used in reading and writing. Caregivers are encouraged to stay for the program to learn the sewing techniques and assist their child(ren). Younger siblings are welcome and a simple stitching project will be available for them. Grades 3-5. Registration begins April 2.

Monday, April 11 (9 a.m.-9 p.m.) Tween Craft Kit Pick-Up – Stop by Youth Services for a tween craft kit! Grades 4-6. Registration begins April 4.

Mondays, April 11 and 25 (3:30-5:30 p.m.) Teen Lounge – Need a place to hang out after school? Come to WPPL’s Teen Lounge for video games, board games and more! Grades 7-12.

Monday, April 11 (4:15-5 p.m.) Softie Storytime – Bring your favorite stuffed animal, soft toy, or doll to a special storytime for children who may not be successful in a typical storytime. Ages 3-9. Siblings welcome. Registration begins April 4.

Monday, April 11 (6-8 p.m.) Jewelry Junction: Earring Making Using Rolled Paper Beads – Learn to make a beautiful pair of silver or gold-plated pierced earrings using rolled paper, beads, and findings. Registration begins April 4.

Monday, April 11 (7-8:30 p.m.) Maker Monday: Geocaching – Learn how to get out and about with geocaching, a worldwide “treasure hunt” using your smartphone’s GPS! Please register.

Tuesday, April 12 (7-8:30 p.m.) Tuesday Evening Book Club (In Person AND Virtual) – Join the WPPL Tuesday Evening Book Club in person or on Zoom to discuss The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich. The discussion will be held in person and on Zoom simultaneously. Please register. If you register for the Zoom option you will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions by email.

Wednesday, April 13 (9:30-9:55 a.m.) Stories and Signs – Enjoy interactive stories, songs and movement activities while learning a few words in sign language. Siblings are welcome! Ages birth-3. Registration begins April 6.

Thursday, April 14 (10-11:30 a.m.) Computer Basics & Introduction to Northstar – Learn how to turn on a computer, use a mouse, go online, and access Northstar Digital Literacy for self-paced online learning. Registration begins April 7.

Thursday, April 13 (3:30-4:30 p.m.) Roblox Arcade (Virtual) – Love Roblox? Then join us in the Roblox Arcade! We have some private servers set up for Tweens in grades 4-6 to hang out with their friends and enjoy some of the most popular games via Zoom. Registration begins April 7.

Friday, April 15 (4-4:30 p.m.) Read It, Make It @ the Library – Make a craft based on a story that is read aloud. Grades PreK-1, siblings are welcome. Registration begins April 8.

Saturday, April 16 (1-2 p.m.) Pokemon Fun – Join Miss Rachel for Pokemon fun! This will be a time to view and trade cards, do a craft (if desired), and play a Pokemon bingo game. Feel free to bring your cards! Ages 6-11. Registration begins April 9.

Saturday, April 16 (2-4 p.m.) Bicycle Maintenance – This class is an introduction to bicycle maintenance. The instructor will cover lubrication, cleaning, basic adjustments and maintenance, and go over the Pre-ride Safety Checklist. Registration begins April 9.
