A pair of heavily intoxicated drivers were arrested by Westlake Police on Jan. 19 after a sad and dangerous bout with the bottle.
The story unfolded when, at approx. 7:45 p.m., officers were called to the scene of a 3 car accident. During the investigation, the officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the breath of the at-fault driver who was then field tested. The 55 year old female from Fairview Park was arrested for OVI (Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated). At the Westlake City Jail she tested almost 2 times the legal limit.
Later in the night, the arrested suspect was allowed to phone a friend to pick her up from the jail. When the friend, a 62 year old Westlake resident, walked into the Police Department lobby, the officer who spoke with him observed that he was noticeably swaying and filled the lobby with the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. The male admitted to driving to the department. He, too, failed field sobriety testing and joined his friend in the Westlake Jail.
Not to be outdone by his lady friend, the 62 year old male tested more than 2 ½ times the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
Both were later released to separate sober persons and were given a court date to appear in Rocky River Municipal Court.
Senior Abuse
Concerned citizens at a local bank called to report that they witnessed an adult son yelling at and then actually physically dragging his elderly mother out of the bank and into a car.
With the complainant’s help, officers were able to identify the Avon residents. When they responded to their house, the investigators, with the help of Avon Police, found that the 85 year old mother was in fact hurt by her own son who was also her care-giver.
An ambulance transported the victim to the hospital while officers stopped the 62 year old son in a vehicle when he was returning home. The son was arrested and ultimately charged with felony domestic violence. The victim was later released from the hospital and was given a Temporary Protection Order. She was also connected with Adult Protective Services for needed resources.
Shoplifter Captured
A Detroit Rd Optometry Center reported that a male had entered the store on Sat 1/20 and had stolen 2 designer frames valued at $910 total. The male had since left the area in a Jeep. Investigation revealed that an alert customer had taken a picture of the Jeep’s license plate as the male fled the area. Theft warrants were obtained for the vehicle’s owner, a 61yo out of Cleveland.
Dazed & Confused
An alert night shift officer noticed an occupied vehicle parked near a closed Center Ridge Rd business. The male inside the car, who was sleeping reclined in the driver’s seat, also had the driver’s door partially open and headlights on. When questioned about his welfare, the male was extremely confused and there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the interior of the car. Investigation revealed that the 28yo North Ridgeville resident was in possession of marijuana and the associated paraphernalia. He was charged with both offenses.
