“There are no losers in wrestling, just winners and learners.”
That’s the motto at the heart of the new Avon Lake Wrestling Club which will conduct information meetings and sign-ups for youth wrestlers on Monday October 7 and Monday October 14 at 7PM in the Avon Lake High School Commons Area.
The club is open to any child age 5 and older.
In a short time the fledgling non-profit club has managed to assemble an impressive team of accomplished coaches and dedicated parents with many years of wrestling experience, including:
Head biddy/youth club coach Marcus Effner, a state champion at Garfield Heights and a 2-time NCAA qualifier;
Assistant Varsity Coach Anthony Coleman, a state champion at Bellevue and a 2-time NCAA qualifier; and Head Varsity Coach Nick Mayer, a 2-year starter at Ohio University; as well as local standouts and long time Learwood Coaches Scott Peepers and Don George.
“I was born in a wrestling room,” says Marcus Effner. “At least that’s how it felt, growing up with a dad who was a college coach (Jack Effner was head coach at Cleveland State University). It’s exciting to see how many kids and parents have already responded to the idea of this club.”
One of the best things about wrestling, is it’s a sport where size doesn’t matter. Big or small, wrestlers are matched by age and weight.
“I was small, and had trouble fitting in, and competing in some of the other sports,” says new Varsity Coach Nick Mayer. “When a wrestling coach turned me on to wrestling, it really changed my life.”
Sure, it’s a great sport for building confidence, strength and balance. But it’s also fun. “Parents always tell me it’s the perfect winter sport for kids,” says Learwood coach Scott Peepers. “They get to roll around on the mats, and they can’t break anything.”
Practices will begin the week of October 28th. K-2nd graders will practice Tues. & Thurs. 6-7 PM. 3rd-6th graders will practice Tues. and Thurs. 7-8:30PM, and Wed. 6-8PM.
Benefits of becoming an Avon Lake Wrestling Club Member will include high level clinicians Marcus Effner and Anthony Coleman.
Periodic clinics through the season will be offered with Ohio State Champ and Kent State All American Danny Mitcheff, noted wrestling coach Erik Burnett, and former St. Ed great and Michigan Assistant coach Mike Kulczycki.
Cost for the youth biddy season is $100, which includes a singlet, t-shirt, shorts, matches for the season, two open tournaments, and several wrestling clinics. There is also a year round program which includes additional clinics, US freestyle card, and registration to freestyle tournaments for $200.
