Wrestling season started with a bang as Avon Lake hosted the annual K of C Tournament at Avon Lake High School Saturday.
Amherst win for the third year in a row, with Lorain – now coached by former St. Ed great Mark Moos – placed second. Avon Lake had a strong showing – “One of our best in years,” said Coach Nick Mayer, by placing fourth. Avon, always a West Shore Conference power, took third in the 16-team event.
Avon Lake was paced by a championship from 132 pounder Joey Bernosky, the second straight at the K of C for the sophomore. Avon had champs in Kolin Carney (103) and Joe Travaglianite (220), while North Ridgeville heavyweight Nick Bailey, a returning WSC champ, also won. Avon Lake had a second from 145 pounder Tyler Mayer, a third from 126 pounder Nick Mayer and a third from Jason Barnicle (175).
