Did you know Avon will officially turn 200 years old on Sept. 14? Your baby could be named “Avon’s Bicentennial Baby.”

The Avon Early Childhood PTA (AECPTA) is honoring the special day in Avon’s history by sponsoring a community-wide Bicentennial Baby contest. The first baby born to a resident of Avon on/or after Sept. 14 at midnight, will have the honor of being named Avon’s Bicentennial Baby. The family will receive a host of prizes from the club, in addition to the honor of having the historic birth.

“The birth of a baby is a special celebration and so is the celebration of a community’s 200th birthday,” said Colleen Karasevic, AECPTA corresponding secretary. “Avon is a community rich is history that is growing and attracting more and more young families. Avon Early Childhood PTA is an organization that brings together young families and offers educational, social and entertaining activities for both parents and children. To celebrate Avon’s Bicentennial and our club’s history of supporting children and families, we will be recognizing the first Avon baby born on or after Avon’s bicentennial on Sept. 14.”

Contest rules:

·         At least one of the baby’s parents must reside in the city of Avon.

·         Entries must be submitted by Sept. 1 via email to corresponding@avonecpta.org.

·         After the baby is born and/or by Sept. 30, parent(s) must contact the AECPTA again at corresponding@avonecpta.org with the actual date and time of birth. Baby born on/or closet after Sept. 14 at midnight will be named Avon’s Bicentennial Baby. **

Entries should include:

·         Parent’s name

·         Street address

·         Email address

·         Phone number

·         Expected due date

**After the baby is born, and/or by Sept. 30, the families must contact the AECPTA again at corresponding@avonecpta.org with the actual date and time of birth. If they do not provide this information by Sept. 30, they will not be eligible.

AECPTA offers social and educational activities that enrich the lives of its members and their children (from birth to kindergarten age). The group gives members the opportunity to share time with their family while connecting with others in the community.

The club also gives back to the community. Last year the AECPTA made a $15,000 donation to the Avon Local Schools for new playground equipment for the middle school campus, which will eventually house preschool and kindergartners when a new middle school is constructed. The club continues to raise funds for the playground construction. AECPTA also collects donations for the Blessing House, a family shelter in Lorain.

AECPTA membership is open to Avon residents and non-residents. The club’s monthly meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of the month (Sept. through May) at 7 p.m. at Heritage North Elementary School (35575 Detroit Road). Babysitting for the meeting is provided for all potential and current members free of charge.

AECPTA started as Avon Preschool Parent’s Club and has since grown to become a part of the Ohio and National PTA. The club is not affiliated with any specific school or program in Avon.
