Nick Mayer Lincoln Service Manager Nick Nunnari always knew that the fine Ford products carried by the Westlake dealership are terrific cars.

But after coming away unhurt from a terrifying collision with a semi-tractor trailer while driving a 2014 Lincoln MKZ in May, he has unshakable first-hand confidence in the safety of Lincoln products.

“It happened at about 7:15 in the morning at the Columbia Road and Center Ridge intersection,” recalls Nunnari, a Westlake City Councilman.

“As I went through the intersection, the right front of a semi hit my right front, swung me completely around, and then ran over my back end.”

Nunnari was amazed at the safety features deployed by the MKZ on impact.

“Airbags came out all around me,” said Nunnari. “Not just from the steering wheel, but everywhere. Even my feet and the shins of my legs were protected by bags. I was never affected by impact or broken glass. It was like balloons came out all around me. It was truly amazing.”

The intersection was closed for about an hour as Nunnari was extracted from the car and taken to St. John Medical Center as a precaution. “But I was not hurt at all,” said Nunnari. “There was an angel looking out for me from above and a Lincoln MKZ around me here on earth. I am sure it saved my life!”

Nunnari’s experience is consistent with standard safety features included with Lincoln new car products. Notable are front seat airbags, front knee airbags, side curtain airbags that deploy from the headliner, and a personal safety system that uses a network of sensors and customizes deployment of the dual-stage front airbags based on the driver’s seat position.

The MKZ also features a post crash SOS System which activates when the airbags are deployed or the fuel shutoff switch engages. The doors unlock and the horn and emergency flashers activate to help first responders locate the vehicle.

This engineering, said Nunnari, was all engaged during his crash.

“Thank God no one was hurt. And thank God I was driving a Lincoln,” said Nunnari. “I am a believer!”
