Bay Police Arrest Flooring Installer for Theft

A Crestview Drive  resident reported that two checks had been stolen out of her house, and one of them was written out and deposited into an account for $200.00 on 06/16/2014 report Bay Village Police.  After investigating, Robert N. Johnson of Middleburg Heights, will be charged with Burglary, Theft, Forgery and Passing Bad Checks.  He worked for a flooring company that was installing floors in the victim’s house.  Johnson admitted that he stole the checks from a bedroom that he didn’t have permission to be in while he was working at the house.  Johnson is currently incarcerated at the Lorain County Jail on unrelated charges.  His charges will be directly filed at Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas.

Bay Business Scammed with Money Cards

On 08/6/2014, the owner of a business at Bay Square contacted BVPD to report he was scammed.  The owner received a call earlier in the day from a person claiming to be from the electric company.  The caller stated the business was behind with paying their electric bill, and he needed to pay the $1,800 bill immediately with Green Dot Money Pak cards or his power would be turned off.  The owner complied, and when called the call back number, the person who answered said the serial numbers on the cards were no good, and he needed to purchase more cards and try again.  The owner was told he would be refunded once new cards were used to pay his bill.  He purchased additional cards, and was again told by the person that answered the phone that the cards were not good.  At this point, the owner realized that he had probably been scammed, and contacted police.  The owner purchased over $3,600 in Green Dot Money Pak cards.  BVPD is investigating.

Just Hitchhiking

On 08/04/2014, at 2251 hrs, a motorist called to report a group of five juveniles attempting to hitchhike on Lake Rd. in the area of Cahoon Rd.  An officer located the group in the walking path parking lot.  Two of them admitted they were attempting to flag down a car for assistance because their vehicle was disabled.  They were assisted and sent on their way.

Car Crash Leads to OVI Arrest

On 08/06/2014, at 2200 hrs, a Fordham Parkway resident called BVPD to report a vehicle had just crashed at a high rate of speed at the guardrail at the south end of the street.  Officers arrived at the scene and began talking to the 26 yoa male Cleveland resident who was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash.  After speaking with him, officers suspected he had been drinking.  Field sobriety tests were administered, and as a result he will be charged with OVI.  He was subsequently transported to hospital for his non-life threatening injuries.  He will face charges at RRMC.

Break In Attempt

On 08/07/2014, at 1709 hrs, a resident in the 31000 block of Wolf Rd. called BVPD to report someone had just attempted to break into her babysitter’s car that was parked in the St. Barnabas parking lot.  The suspects were gone when police arrived, but the caller provided a description and license plate of the suspect vehicle.  Police are investigating.

ID Theft

On 08/07/2014, at 1725 hrs, a Cliff Dr. resident called to report someone had stolen her identity and opened up a Verizon account.  Police are investigating.


On 08/08/2014, at 0247 hrs, a BVPD officer stopped a vehicle on Wolf Rd. near Glen Park for a traffic violation.  After speaking with the 21 yoa male driver, the officer suspected the driver had been drinking.  Field sobriety tests were administered, and as a result, the Bay Village resident was arrested for OVI.  He will face charges at RRMC.
