The Avon High football team, looking for its fifth straight West Shore Conference championship this year, opened the season with a huge 44-7 win over neighborhood rival Avon Lake Friday night.

The  Eagles, who will be joining the Shoremen under a realignment of the Southwestern Conference next year, dominated every part of Friday’s game.  Avon junior quarterback Jake Sopko set the tone early as he connected with Zack Torbert for 133 yards passing in the first half alone. Avon led, 24-7, at intermission. The Eagles rolled up 355 yards of offense in the game while the Avon defense throttled the Shoremen. Only a superhuman effort by Avon Lake running back Sam Klimkowski for a 21-yard TD offered the Shoremen a game highlight.

Avon hosts East Tech in its home opener this Friday while Avon Lake visits Bedford.
