Aug. 7 is the earliest date contact drills are allowed for high school football in Ohio. The Eagles wasted no time in seizing the moment as they held a late night practice under the lights on the varsity field behind Avon Middle School.
As the scoreboard clock ticked off the seconds to midnight, Coach Mike Elder and staff lined up the pads. Nutcracker drills commenced one minute after the clock hit zero.
“Everybody gets two turns,” said Elder as he held back some of the enthusiastic Eagles from jumping for a third go.
The cool night air was punctuated by the sound of shoulder pads popping and teammates cheering each other on. The session lasted about 45 minutes and, as far as Avon football is concerned, summer is over and football season is here. They wouldn’t have it any other way!
