As part of northeast Ohio’s premier senior living community at 22709 Lake Road in Rocky River, The Normandy is home to a technologically advanced Rehabilitation Center. It provides residents with the best in physical, occupational and speech therapy. It includes a home-like simulated setting were domestic skills can be regained, and a 3500 square foot gym where one-on-one therapy sessions are tailored to patient needs.

“We offer excellence in physical, occupational and speech therapy services,” says Matthew Shula, LNHA, Administrator, The Normandy Care Center. “Many patients are in need of care after a hospital stay. We have a social worker here and we work closely with the patient on discharge planning that includes a comprehensive home assessment and home safety evaluation.”

Ellen Straub, PT, Rehabilitation Program Director, says the transition from a hospital stay to returning home is three-fold: Rehab while at The Normandy, Outpatient therapy, and at-home physical therapy in the same continuum of care.

Normandy Apartments resident Marge Gerard is a success story. She now enjoys independence of movement as a result of Normandy physical therapy.

“I love it. I paid attention to what the girls told me and practice on my own. I still do it,” says Marge. At one time, Marge had trouble standing. Now she moves with ease. “Now I can stand for 15 minutes easily,” she says. “I used to have to lean against the wall. They are with you all the way here, and when you need them they are here. You know your therapists and they know you.”

A common goal in rehab is to help patients regain household abilities like standing at the stove or folding laundry. “We treated Marge at home and also as an out-patient,” said Straub. “The important thing is keep patients in motion. It is all part of a continuum of care.”
