Westlake High Junior Named to US Geography Olympiad Team

Kyle Yu receives his 2017 National Champion award from National History Bee & Bowl Executive Director David Madden.

Westlake High School junior Kyle Yu earned a spot on the US Geography Olympiad Varsity Team for his performance at the 5th annual Varsity National Championships of the US Geography Olympiad (USGO).

Kyle, last year’s Junior Varsity champion, became the second Varsity student ever to win all three portions of the competition – a map exam, a written exam and a multiple choice exam – as well as the overall title, at the contest held April 21 in Arlington, Virginia. Kyle was one of 178 students competing – 93 Varsity and 85 Junior Varsity. Kyle also competed in the inaugural Varsity US National Championship of the International Geography Bee (IGB), in which he placed sixth place overall. Kyle was named the 2017 National Champion after three separate USGO exams and five rounds of buzzer quiz competition in the IGB.

By winning the Varsity Division, Kyle earned the right to represent the United States at the 2017 International Geography Olympiad, to be held in Belgrade, Serbia, this summer. Other Team USA members include students from Illinois, Florida and Maryland.
