Westlake Police: Good Samaritans Help Save I-90 OD
Good samaritans who performed CPR on an OD’ed I-90 driver were advised to get checked out for exposure to dangerous drugs on Feb. 13. Here’s the story:
On Feb. 13 at about 6 p.m. officers and the fire department responded to a report of an accident on I-90 westbound between Columbia and Crocker Rds. Bystanders were performing CPR on one of the people on scene who had stopped breathing. Although the vehicle did not strike anything, it appeared that the operator had passed out while driving and drifted off the roadway onto the berm. Evidence of drug use was noted and the driver was treated for an overdose of opioids. The Westlake paramedics used narcan to revive the 40yo female from Elyria. Officers collected suspected narcotics and paraphernalia from the vehicle. The victim was transported to hospital for additional treatment. The good Samaritans heeded the officers’ advice to also get checked out at the hospital for possible exposure to the dangerous drugs. No citizens or first responders reported ill effects.
Bathroom Boozer
A gas station boozer who didn’t believe in carry-out did his drinking in the restroom of a Crocker-Clemens gas station on Feb. 8, leading to police intervention. The clerk called police at 8:41 p.m to complain of a male inside the store who had broken one bottle of alcohol then took a second bottle into the restroom where he consumed same. He left without paying for either bottle. Officers located the male who had already walked back into the store and grabbed a third bottle of Vodka. The male was headed back toward the restroom with the bottle when confronted. The 47 year-old from Avon Lake admitted that he had consumed the vodka earlier in the potty. He was placed into custody for disorderly conduct while intoxicated and theft. Officers discovered he was over 4 ½ times the legal limit when had he been driving. They became concerned for his welfare and he was taken to the hospital for observation. Officers had to take the same male into custody for his own welfare the next day after he passed out in a bathroom at a restaurant at Crocker Park.
Driving Lesson
A Westlake driver was apparently so drunk on Feb. 9 that he had to be coached on how to shift his automatic transmission! The immobilized operator was approached by police on Feb. 9 on Cobblestone Way at 10 p.m. after a report of a driver slumped over the wheel of their vehicle which was in the middle of the street. When officers woke the male up and told him to shift the car into park, the driver rolled the rear window down. He had to be coached on how to shift the automatic transmission. The 65 year-old from Rocky River was field tested and arrested for OVI. He later refused a breath test.
Buffoon with Buffant
Nothing like a good shampoo to bring out the best in a girl! On Feb. 11 at 1:30 p.m. officers responded to a hair salon on Detroit Rd. after employees reported that one of their customers was drunk inside the salon, yelling and causing a scene. Officer heard the commotion coming from the hair washing stations. The described female asked if the WPD was there to arrest her and admitted to being the person yelling. She explained that she was causing a commotion because it felt so good to get her hair washed! Employees also pointed out that the customer actually fell out of her chair during the appointment and struck her head on the floor. The 34 year-old from Wellington was arrested and transported to the hospital to be checked out. She was later cited with disorderly conduct while intoxicated.
Road Rage
On Feb. 11 at approx. 10 p.m., Westlake police were alerted to a road rage incident occurring on I-90 which possibly stemmed from a hit-skip which occurred in Cleveland. The complainant reported that the driver of another vehicle had thrown something at his car and cut him off. Officers stopped the suspect vehicle on I-90 at Crocker. The driver tried to identify himself as his brother. Luckily, the officers knew of past dealings with both brothers and checked out the claim. When the identity of the 36 year-old from Westlake was fully confirmed, the officers learned that not only was he driving under suspension, he had an active warrant from North Olmsted PD. An inventory of the vehicle revealed marijuana and a scale. The driver was arrested and charged with driving under suspension, Misidentification, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The driver of the other car said he would check for damage in the morning and report it to Cleveland PD where the incident had occurred.
Late for Work!
Job Interview – right! On Feb. 13 at approx. 9:35 a.m., an officer stopped a vehicle on I-90 at the Lorain County line for speeding. The male driver said that he was headed to a job interview. The passenger said he was along for the ride. The officer noted indicators that pointed to the fact that there might be more going on than a common speeding traffic stop. A WPD K9 was utilized to sniff the vehicle and positively alerted. Inside, officers located suspected oxycodone powder, crack pipes, multitudes of burnt foil, and a knife. Both males, one a 22 year old, the other a 20 year-old, were from Avon Lake and were taken into custody. They were charged with F5 possession of dangerous drugs.
GAP Getaway
A shoplifter lammed out of the Crocker Park GAP store with more than $700 of goods on Feb. 11 at 8:20 p.m. A “tall male” in a black jacket with black/grey jeans, a red hat and a large reusable shopping bag stole jeans and other clothes from the front of the store, reported employees. Neither the direction of travel nor a vehicle involved was known. View the surveillance video below.
