The Westlake girls varsity cross country team finished 1st place on a crowded and talented course at the Strongsville Cross Country Invitational on Saturday. Finishing 2nd and behind Westlake was the 2021 state champion, Perrysburg.
“When your top 5 all come in under 19:30 and your average team race time (at 18:52) breaks a school record, it’s a great race day,” said Coach Sullivan.
Junior Co-Captain Sarah Peer ran a good part of the race shoulder-to-shoulder with Ohio’s #1 ranked runner coming in 2nd place and breaking her own record at 17:30.20.
Packing together most of the race were Senior Co-Captain Sydney Peer, Junior Ellie Irwin, Freshman Julia Richards, and Junior Co-Captain Christina Ware. In doing so, all four athletes broke their own personal records and helped secure the 1st place win for Westlake. “I felt good,” said Sydney Peer. “The weather was just right for running and running in a pack with your teammates helps us push each other, which paid off today in a big way.”
