Truck on the Rocks
On Sept. 18 at about 5:15 a.m., a citizen called Westlake Police to report that someone was trying to steal landscaping rocks from his yard. Officers arrived to find a Chevy Silverado had run over large landscaping rocks in the yard. When the police went to talk to the driver, they noted that there was an open bottle of Bud Light in the center console alongside a cup filled with a brown drink. The driver appeared lethargic. He was field tested. The 35yo Cleveland resident was arrested for OVI. WPD summoned Pattons Towing to get the vehicle off the rocks while the male was transported to the WPD Jail. The driver took a breath test and was found to be over 2 and ½ times the legal limit. He was charged with prohibited BAC and failing to control in addition to the OVI.
Catalytic Converters Stolen
On 9/19/22 at approx. 9AM a business on Detroit at Bradley reported that multiple work vehicles had their catalytic converters removed during the overnight hours. Between Saturday evening and Monday morning 2 work trucks had been damaged by the theft.
SUV Theft Leads to Multiple Charges
On 9/19/22 at about 10:15AM officers responded to the Westlake Recreation Center for a reported theft. A citizen believed that she may have lost the keys to her Buick Encore which was now missing from the parking lot. Officers learned that not only was the vehicle stolen from the lot, the SUV had contained the victim’s purse and credit cards. Investigation revealed that a female suspect had entered the Rec Center and gone to the locker room. The victim had her keys and jacket in an unlocked locker before the suspect entered the unattended room. The suspect then returned to the parking lot where she located the victim’s vehicle. The suspect left the area in the Buick and attempted to use the stolen credit cards to purchase gift cards. Officers were able to track the stolen SUV to a highway west of Sandusky. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was guided to intercept the stolen vehicle while the SUV was shut down remotely. A 48yo Cleveland female was arrested in the vehicle. She was the same person seen at the Westlake Rec Center. WPD expects the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury to indict her on various felony charged including grand theft motor vehicle.
No License, Loaded Handgun
On 9/12/22 at approx. 11:30PM a vehicle was stopped at Hilliard at Clague Rd for traffic and equipment violations. The operator admitted he did not have a valid license. Investigation revealed that the 35yo Roxboro, NC resident also was in possession of a loaded handgun along with suspected marijuana and ecstasy. The male was not supposed to have a gun due to prior felony possession of cocaine and weapons charges. He was arrested and transported to the Westlake Jail. The driver waived his preliminary hearing and was bound over to the Cuyahoga County Grand Jury on a $50,000 cash/surety bond.
Fast Reverse Leads to Crash
On 9/9/22 at approx. 11:45PM night shift officers on patrol watched as a pickup truck reversed quickly from Fallen Oaks onto Center Ridge Rd. Unfortunately, the pickup truck backed up right into a vehicle driving on Center Ridge. As the police officers pulled up to check on injuries, the suspect vehicle was still trying to back up through the other vehicle. The driver appeared to be intoxicated but when asked how much he had to drink said “not much.” The 21yo Parma resident was field tested and arrested for OVI. The officers also found an open beer that the man had been drinking. Luckily no one was injured in the crash. The arrested driver tested almost 2 and ½ times over the legal limit.
Thefts of Autos
On 9/8/22 a resident of East Brockway reported that his Audi was stolen out of the driveway overnight. The key was accidently left in the unlocked vehicle. The car was recovered on 9/14 in the area of E.39th St in Cleveland.
On 9/12/22 a resident of Adelaide Ct reported that his Honda CRV was taken from the driveway overnight. The key was accidently left in the unlocked vehicle. The SUV is entered in police databases as stolen.
On 9/12/22 a resident of Fitzroy St reported that their Dodge Challenger was stolen out of the driveway overnight. It appears that the key fob was accidently left in the unlocked vehicle. The car is entered in police databases.
On 9/13/22 a resident of Excalibur Ave reported that their Jaguar was stolen from the driveway overnight. It appears that the key fob was accidently left in the unlocked vehicle. The car is also entered into police databases as being stolen.
Thefts FROM Autos
On 9/12/22 – Prince Charles – Cash and credit cards stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the driveway
On 9/13/22 – Jefferson Way – 3 unlocked vehicles entered – nothing reported missing.
On 9/13/22 – Nottingham Ct – Purse taken from an apparently unlocked vehicle.
On 9/14/22 – Bel Aire Cir – Firearm was stolen from an unlocked vehicle.
On 9/15/22 – Regency Cir – Resident reported that their purse was taken from a vehicle on 9/12.
The Westlake Police Department reminds citizens that although the department is utilizing available technology and extra patrols to attempt to detect and deter the groups coming into the city to steal from autos, the first step to protect property is for everyone is to
1) LOCK UP their vehicles and garages each and every night
2) DO NOT leave keys in unattended vehicles
3) take all valuables including firearms, purses, jewelry and purses from vehicles no matter where you park them.
Slumped over Wheel
On 09/12/2022, at 1528 hrs, BVPD received a report of a Jeep stopped on the side of Lake Rd. near Bryson with the driver slumped over the wheel. Responding officers located the vehicle and checked on the welfare of the driver. The driver was fine, and indicated his vehicle was disable. A tow was requested for the vehicle.
Unlocked Vehicle Entered
On 09/12/2022, at 2009 hrs, a resident in the 23000 block of Wolf Rd. called to report her unlocked vehicle had been entered overnight. A small amount of cash was taken. Police are investigating. BVPD reminds residents to lock your doors and remove valuables from your vehicles.
Ticket for School Bus Scofflaw
On 09/14/2022, at 0854 hrs, a Bay Village City School bus driver reported that someone had passed her stopped school bus. The incident happened on the afternoon of 09/09/2022.
The driver was stopped discharging students on Lake Rd. near Lake Forest with her stop sign deployed and lights flashing when a vehicle passed her. After reviewing the video footage and a brief investigation, the driver was identified. The 51-yoa Brunswick resident was cited for Passing a Stopped School Bus and will face charges at RRMC.
Lake Road Crash
On 09/16/2022, at 2234 hrs, BVPD received several calls of a motor vehicle crash on Lake Rd. near Upland, and both of the drivers were in the roadway yelling at each other. Officers spoke with the drivers of the two vehicles involved. After speaking with the at fault driver, officers suspected the driver had been drinking. Field sobriety tests were administered, and as a result, the driver was arrested for OVI. The 41-yoa Cleveland resident will face charges at RRMC.
