The West Shore Chamber of Commerce hosted a special farewell celebration, “A Toast to John Sobolewski,” on February 27, 2025, at the Elks Lodge in Westlake, where over 100 guests gathered to honor John Sobolewski’s 39 years of leadership as Executive Director.
Throughout the evening, business leaders, elected officials, and longtime friends paid tribute to John’s remarkable contributions to the Chamber and the local business community. The event was filled with laughter, heartfelt speeches, and special recognitions, all underscoring John’s impact on strengthening businesses, fostering connections, and shaping The West Shore Chamber into what it is today.
After a lively reception of music and camaraderie, incoming Executive Director Nan Baker opened the formal program with a quote from Charles Darwin:
“A man’s friendships are one of the best measures of his worth.”
Addressing the crowd, Baker reflected, “This quote captures the idea that the quality of a man’s friends reflects his own character and value, echoing the saying, ‘Show me your friends, and I’ll show you who you are.’ This is John Sobolewski.” The room erupted in applause.
A Legacy of Leadership Recognized at the Local, State, & National Levels
John’s influence on the West Shore business community was celebrated with multiple proclamations and honors.
- Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough presented John with a City of Westlake Proclamation in recognition of his decades of service, officially declaring Thursday, February 27 as “John Sobolewski Day.”
- Governor Mike DeWine issued a State Proclamation, honoring John’s long-standing contributions to business and community development.
- Congressman Max Miller issued a Congressional Proclamation, further solidifying John’s lasting impact.
As a lasting tribute, The West Shore Chamber announced the renaming of its annual high school scholarships in John’s honor. Beginning this year, two $1,000 scholarships—one for a Westlake High School student and one for a Bay Village High School student—will now be known as the “John Sobolewski West Shore Chamber of Commerce Scholarships”, ensuring his legacy continues for future generations.
A Night of Memories, Humor, and Celebration
West Shore Chamber President Linda Hamann entertained the audience with a lighthearted segment titled “Did You Know THIS About John?”, sharing fun trivia and personal stories that gave attendees an even deeper appreciation for John’s humor, work ethic, and dedication.
A special slideshow showcased memories spanning John’s 39-year tenure, featuring photos from past events and milestones. Guests were also treated to a video tribute from John’s family, including heartfelt messages from his children and grandchildren. His wife, Ria, who has been by his side for 48 years, expressed her gratitude for the warm wishes and shared memories throughout the evening.
John concluded the evening by thanking the Chamber, its members, and the community for their support and friendships over the years. The event closed with DJ Kenny G playing John’s favorite song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” as the entire room joined in singing—creating a fitting sendoff for a leader who has truly left his mark on the West Shore business community.
