Donald Sheldon, MD, President of University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center, recently presented the Kevin C. Martin Leadership Award to Mr. Tony Wallish, MT (ASCP).
Developed in 2005 as part of the hospital’s Rewards and Appreciation program, this annually-distributed honor recognizes leaders who consistently demonstrate the values that are essential to the organization’s success. The award was named for Mr. Kevin C. Martin, the late President and Chief Executive Officer of EMH Healthcare from 1998 until February 2009, when he succumbed to cancer.
As Director of Laboratory Services for UH Elyria Medical Center, Mr. Wallish is responsible for the operations of the entire laboratory department, including clinical and anatomic pathology. He oversees approximately 110 people in the laboratories at the Elyria, Amherst and Avon campuses as well as at Patient Service Centers located throughout the region. He has been employed by the hospital for 10 years.
Kevin C. Martin Leadership Award winners are nominated by their staff members, which holds special meaning for recipients. “I really enjoy my role as leader of the laboratory team and working with such a dedicated group of employees,” said Mr. Wallish. He continued, “To be recognized by my staff as someone deserving of this honor is both humbling and fulfilling.”
Mr. Wallish worked with Kevin Martin for several years during his tenure as President and CEO, and he appreciates the significance of the award named in his honor: “Kevin was very approachable, yet very focused on getting things done.” He continued by adding, “I always considered him to have the highest integrity, and I respected his leadership qualities.”
Married for 32 years, Mr. Wallish and his wife have two adult sons. They reside in Cuyahoga County.
