Area High School Football Teams Off to Fantastic Starts

Westlake Gridders Cruise to 4-0

Quarterback Sam Brucchieri (5)

The Westlake High football team is off to one of its best starts in recent years.

The Demons advanced to 4-0 this season with a 28-21 win over visiting Normandy last Friday night.

The victory follows three straight decisions over Warrensville Hts, 35-34, Rhodes, 45-18, and Midview, 42-28.

Westlake came from behind against winless Normandy after the Invaders posted an 8-0 lead on the strength of a safety and short TD run.

Cooper Rummel (1)

The Demons found momentum late in the second quarter as 6-5 junior quarterback Sam Brucchieri found tight end Chris Cambell on a one yard touchdown toss. Running Back Matthew Porcelli followed with a one-yard TD in the second quarter to give Westlake the lead.

Normandy came back after the intermission, scoring after a Westlake fumble. But the Demons’ Cooper Rummel came up with an interception and then scored on a 10-yard toss from Brucchieri to give Westlake the lead.  Jake Ostrowski found his  way to the goal line for a fourth quarter Westlak to seal the win.

Traveling to Medina Buckeye this Friday, Westlake will face the also-undefeated Bucks (4-0) in Great Lake Conference play.
